This study examines the impact of geopolitical developments on the restructuring of global liner shipping networks and the strategic responses adopted by shipping companies in an increasingly uncertain geopolitical environment. It explores how geopolitical tensions, regional conflicts and disruptions in strategic maritime corridors affect the functioning of liner shipping, the structure of maritime transport networks and port connectivity.
Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative approach supported by selected descriptive quantitative data from secondary sources. The analysis combines a systematic review of the international literature with an empirical case study focusing on geopolitical instability in West Africa, particularly in the Gulf of Guinea. This approach enables the integration of theoretical perspectives with real-world developments in the maritime sector.
The findings indicate that geopolitical instability has become a key driver in shaping global maritime transport networks. Such disruptions lead to route diversification, reallocation of shipping capacity, adjustments in service networks and shifts in the strategic role of ports. At the same time, liner shipping companies adopt a range of adaptive strategies, including fleet redeployment, service restructuring, blank sailings and the avoidance of high-risk areas.
The case study of West Africa further demonstrates that maritime insecurity, piracy and regional instability significantly affect port connectivity and operational decision-making. Overall, the study highlights the growing importance of geopolitical risk in shaping both the operational and strategic behavior of liner shipping companies and in influencing the evolution of global maritime transport networks.
