This thesis examines the contribution of regulatory innovation to the green and digital transition of businesses within the European Union. More specifically, it analyzes the role of the Digital Product Passport (DPP) and the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) as two complementary tools that enhance sustainability, transparency, and business compliance with the principles of the circular economy and responsible production and consumption.
Initially, the study presents the institutional and operational framework of the DPP, the main categories of data it includes, as well as the requirements of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) regarding traceability, sustainability, and product life-cycle management. Furthermore, it explores the benefits and challenges of its implementation for businesses, placing particular emphasis on supply chain transparency and compliance with European environmental policies.
Subsequently, the thesis investigates the AI Act and its human-centric, risk-based approach to the regulation of artificial intelligence systems. The study highlights the regulatory obligations of AI providers and deployers, its interconnection with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), as well as the contribution of the Regulation to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12) concerning responsible consumption and production.
Finally, through the case study of the European PLOOTO project, the research examines how innovation ecosystems, digital twins, and data management tools can accelerate the twin green and digital transition. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that the combined implementation of the DPP and the AI Act can serve as a critical driver of sustainable development and competitiveness for modern businesses.
