The purpose of this present thesis is to highlight the progressive economic cooperation of the
countries Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa within the framework of the BRICS
group through the broader theory of economic integration. Economic integration is
fundamentally based on a threefold pillar: trade, financial transactions and monetary relations.
In this analysis, the BRICS countries are examined through the lens of monetary relations,
specifically the theory of Optimum Currency Areas (OCA). The form, the intensity and the
nature of their economic cooperation, the obstacles in the convergence of their economies and
the potential for further integration within a landscape economically dominated by China will
be highlighted through the OCA criteria. For the preparation of this thesis, academic literature
and articles have been conducted.
