For Greece, the agricultural sector is one of the most important pillars of the economic and social life of the country. The country’s distinctive geomorphology, characterized by its intense mountainous and insular landscape, combined with the deep-rooted connection of local communities to the land and its products, has shaped a primary sector that is closely intertwined with the Greek tradition, cultural identity, and social cohesion. At the same time, the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has decisively influenced its course through the aid it provides to producers. This paper examines the agricultural subsidies in Greece and assesses their footprint in the primary sector, with the aim of examining whether they have substantially contributed to the productive upgrading, the improvement of agricultural income and the sustainability of the sector. This is exactly what is at the core of this paper.
The structure of the thesis is organized as follows; the second chapter presents the historical development of CAP, its basic reforms, its pillars and objectives, as well as its correlation with the Greek reality. The third chapter examines the relationship between subsidies and production, both at the national level and in the Region of Epirus, through the analysis of key economic figures and productive indicators. The fourth chapter presents the methodology of primary research, its limitations, as well as the quantitative and qualitative findings that emerged. The fifth chapter discusses the results of the research as a whole, is linked to the basic questions set for the thesis and conclusions as well as policy guidelines for the future of the agricultural sector in Greece are highlighted.
