| dc.description.abstractEN | As we transition into a more environmentally conscious era, the imperative for the
maritime industry to adopt greener practices is undeniable. The ferry sector, which
serves millions of passengers, should prioritize safety and efficiency and ensure that
travelers can be confident that their journeys do not contribute to environmental
degradation. Embracing sustainable technologies and low-emission solutions is
essential for minimizing the ecological footprint of ferry transport while maintaining
high standards of reliability and passenger security. This study aims to assess whether
the ferry fleet has undergone modernization and to evaluate the extent to which ferry
companies comply with environmental standards and policies. This thesis examines
technological advancements in the sector, the implementation of sustainable practices,
and the alignment of ferry operators with regulatory frameworks designed to reduce
emissions and enhance environmental performance. The hypothesis is that most of the
ferry fleet is aligned with international environmental standards, incorporating
sustainable technologies and practices. Despite the assumption that full compliance
with the ferry fleet with international environmental standards remains a challenge.
Concluding that the modernization of the ferry fleet is essential for achieving a more
sustainable maritime industry, significantly reducing emissions and improving
operational efficiency, although challenges related to investment and regulatory
support remain. The paper is separated into 6 chapters: 1) Introduction; 2) The
