This thesis examines the relationship between the city and the port, focusing on Rotterdam, one of the most significant examples of a modern port city in Europe. It analyzes how the port influences the city’s economic development, urban planning, social life, and spatial evolution. The economic impacts of port activities, environmental and social challenges, as well as strategies for sustainable development and urban regeneration are presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the functional integration of the port into the urban fabric and on how Rotterdam serves as a model for the coexistence of city and port.
