This paper focuses on the analysis of sustainable urban mobility and its connection to the quality of life in modern cities, aiming to reveal the challenges and opportunities presented for creating sustainable urban environments. Starting with fundamental definitions and concepts, it examines how Greece and Europe have adopted actions and strategies to enhance urban sustainability, while simultaneously evaluating existing practices and their performance on a global scale.
The study explores the relationship between mobility and sustainability, emphasizing the social, environmental, and energy implications that sustainable transport brings to residents' quality of life. Subsequently, through the analysis of statistical data, the challenges facing cities are described—such as traffic congestion, air pollution, and the lack of adequate infrastructure—while highlighting the importance of population growth and movement for both citizens and the distribution of goods.
A significant portion of the work is dedicated to sustainable mobility strategies implemented through Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs). These include practices such as improving public transport, developing bike lanes and pedestrian zones, and promoting micromobility alongside the restricted use of private vehicles. The contribution of new technologies and innovations, such as smart mobility applications and accessibility solutions for people with disabilities, is also examined, as well as strategies for citizen participation in shaping mobility policies.
This analysis is enriched by case studies of successful cities, such as Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Vienna, which have adopted sustainable practices with positive impacts on society, the environment, and the economy. Through comparative analysis, the factors contributing to their success are identified to serve as models for other cities.
Finally, the paper examines contemporary trends and future challenges in sustainable urban mobility, such as autonomous vehicles and green technologies, and formulates proposals for enhancing urban sustainability. Upon completion, the findings are summarized and interconnected, highlighting the role of sustainable mobility in improving quality of life and developing environmentally conscious and socially resilient cities."
