This thesis aims to investigate the impact of the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war on
shipping and international trade. Analysis of existing literature concludes that the negative
impact of both the pandemic and the war on the relationship between shipping and international
trade is heterogeneous, with location, time, cargo-product, and alliance (mainly regarding the
war) playing important roles. This dissertation contributes to the academic community and the
market by highlighting the need for international cooperation, upgrading ports and ships using
smart technology, diversifying shipping companies' activities, and improving risk management
by both the market and the state. More research is expected in the future due to the continuous
evolution of crises.
