This study focuses on the causes and triggers, as well as the international consequences of the Russo-Ukrainian war, which began on February 24, 2022, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. What essentially contributed decisively to the war was the expansion of NATO towards the East and specifically towards Ukraine, which would constitute a key threat to Russia's national security. More specifically, the first chapters analyze the historical and geopolitical crisis, focusing on the political processes that led Ukraine to seek integration with Western institutions, such as the European Union and NATO, causing strong concern in Moscow. This work describes the stages of the military conflict, the dynamics of Russia's aggressive actions and the corresponding sanctions and political responses from the West. The role of the United States, the European Union and other Western powers in supporting Ukraine, both militarily and diplomatically, is also examined. The analysis of the economic and energy impacts that have arisen worldwide from this war is also considered important. This work is also based on the mechanisms of international diplomacy, the role of the UN, as well as on the efforts for peace negotiations, which have proven challenging due to the opposing strategic interests. Finally, it examines the long-term implications for East-West relations, the shifting balance of power and the security perspective on the European continent and the search for new channels of communication and cooperation in a constantly changing geopolitical field. Overall, this paper offers a deep understanding of the conflicts linked to national interests, geostrategic pursuits, and the acceleration of escalation between these two major geopolitical powers, while illuminating the dynamics of the contemporary international security system.
