By reflecting on world history and its examples, one can understand that often the pursuit of a better life on the one hand and the demand for security on the other come into conflict. Given existing dangers such as terrorism, organized crime, and all kinds of extremism, the above-mentioned conflict becomes even more intense. Therefore, in the effort to address and balance all of the above, states, the international community and regional players, such as the European Union, have proceeded to find mechanisms, institutions and bodies capable of carrying out the following extremely difficult task; the protection of internal security on the one hand and respect for human life and human rights on the other. Given that in states, security is closely linked to the protection of their borders - already from the conception of the concept of the state -, they place special emphasis on their protection. In particular, regarding the member states of the European Union, which are bound by the acquis Communautaire, the question of the protection of external borders emerges in a major way. This is also proven by the establishment of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, also known as Frontex, whose establishment, development and evolution framework is also the central issue of this paper. More specifically, the analysis that will be attempted seeks to approach the activity of the said Agency as multidimensionally as possible, examining both positive and more “grey” aspects.
