The pivotal importance of shipping for the well-being of EU citizens is indisputable, given the fact that the sector in question constitutes a key pillar of the European economy and a source of thousands of jobs for its citizens. The drawing up and implementation of a common maritime policy within the framework of the European Union is a key pillar of the political integration of the member states and is currently being developed with the concept of the sustainable development of the blue economy as a key axis both at the European and international level. In the context of the present paper, the main axes of application of the EU's common maritime policy are investigated, as well as the implications it has for global shipping. In addition, the policies implemented to ensure the competitiveness of European shipping in the context of modern globalized international shipping are investigated as well as the results of these policies. Through the study of the available data, it is concluded that the modern policy of the E.U. within the shipping sector, it is fully harmonized with the modern imperatives of dealing with the climate crisis and its effects, while important steps have been taken in the direction of maintaining the competitiveness of European shipping in the context of a fully competitive industry. However, it is considered necessary to have a constant and uninterrupted adherence to these goals in order to achieve the desired results and to ensure the well-being of EU citizens.
