Sustainability in shipping has long been a topic of discussion, but in recent years it has gained particular importance due to the increasing pressure of international regulations and institutional frameworks. Shipping companies are now required to effectively integrate practices that address environmental protection, social responsibility, and corporate governance. This study focuses on the three ESG pillars, with particular emphasis on alternative fuels, which represent both a critical and challenging issue for the industry.
The research employed a qualitative methodology, conducting interviews with three shipping companies with different assets, which were categorized as Innovators, Early Adopters, and Followers. The analysis revealed that large companies perceive sustainability as a strategic advantage, investing in innovation and ESG reporting, medium-sized companies adopt selective practices to remain competitive, while smaller companies primarily focus on regulatory compliance.
The findings indicate that the sustainable development in shipping is no longer optional but a necessity. The key challenge lies in creating the appropriate incentives and policies that will enable companies of all sizes to align with international developments. This study contributes to the understanding of the sector’s diverse approaches to sustainability and highlights the need for collective actions to ensure a balanced and sustainable future for the shipping industry.
