This thesis explores how the democratic ideals of Classical Athens shaped – and were reshaped within – the political thought of the American Founding Fathers and the institutions of the early United States. The text starts by explaining three core Athenian principles which include *demokratia* (people's governance) and *isonomia* (legal equality) and *eleutheria* (political freedom) and the requirement for citizens to actively participate in governance. The text compares Athens' direct democracy system which operated through the Assembly and Council and popular courts to its extensive exclusion of women and slaves and resident foreigners who lacked political rights despite its claims of freedom and equality.
