The European Union (EU) faces the challenge of digital sovereignty and
autonomy in the era of digital transformation. In this thesis, we examine the EU's
quest for digital sovereignty and autonomy, exploring the challenges it faces, the
policies and strategies it has adopted to overcome them, and the implications of these
efforts for the future of the EU.
It begins by attempting an overview of the history of the European Union,
studying its gradual evolution as well as the theories of integration on which the EU
edifice was built.
In the second chapter, after giving the concepts of the internet and cyberspace,
the terms digital sovereignty and autonomy are analysed, underlining their importance
in the current digital landscape.
This is followed by a study of the EU in the light of the digital age. In particular,
it analyses the efforts and legislation adopted by the Union in order to respond to the
demands and challenges posed by technology and its rapid growth. In this context,
particular attention is paid to digital rights, which are now included among the
fundamental rights.
In the following, we look at the practices followed by the EU in the pursuit of
digital sovereignty and autonomy, but also at the challenges it has to face, which stem
from the speed at which digital reality is evolving.
Chapter five discusses the concept of digital geopolitics and in the same chapter
the relationship between the EU and the US and China, through its attempt to become
digitally autonomous.
The final chapter presents the conclusions that have emerged from the whole
work.
