This dissertation examines the rapid evolution of liner shipping from its traditional form to the modern era of containerization. The focus of this study is the analysis of strategic alliances and joint ventures as necessary organizational structures for achieving economies of scale and managing high fixed costs. Based on the Resource-Based View (RBV) and the Resource Dependence Theory (RDT), this work discusses how the abolition of shipping conferences by the European Union in 2008 led to the creation of a dynamic oligopoly, as three major alliance groups manage approximately 80% of global containerized trade. This dissertation critically examines the consequences of this concentration on both freight rates and capacity management techniques, such as “blank sailings” and the use of mega-ships, which, while reducing operating costs, have caused a significant deterioration in service reliability and increased pressure on port infrastructure. It also describes the monopsony power of alliances over ports and the inflationary pressures transferred to the final consumer, suggesting certain measures to address the negative impacts of alliances across the entire global supply chain.
