Abstract

The objective of the present study is to examine the role of ports as energy hubs in facilitating the decarbonization of maritime transport and supporting the broader regional energy transition. Particular emphasis is placed on the institutional and regulatory framework, the range of technological options related to alternative fuels, and the challenges encountered by port authorities throughout the process of energy transformation. Through the case study of the Port of Piraeus, this research investigates the extent to which theoretical conceptualizations of ports as energy hubs are implemented in practice, and evaluates the degree to which this specific port has the potential to develop into a regional energy hub within the Eastern Mediterranean.
