This study examines the future of port work amid contemporary technological changes brought about by automation, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence, as well as the changes that have accelerated since the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for enhanced resilience and adaptability in port activities, acting as an accelerator for the adoption of digital tools and the further maturation of the "Smart Ports" model. In this context, the historical development of ports from antiquity to the modern day is described, with an emphasis on the technological innovations that have defined their operation, such as the use of containers, lifting equipment, and control and management systems.
Further investigation of the path towards Smart Ports is required, as the integration of technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Digital Twins, and information analysis platforms are reshaping port activities. Particular emphasis is placed on the analysis of the port of Rotterdam, which is one of the most characteristic examples of the application of advanced automation and digital management systems. In addition, this study focuses on how these innovations affect the workforce, bringing about changes in the required skills, working conditions, and the further shaping of the role of workers in the current port environment.
