This thesis examines the development of post-war Greek-owned shipping, focusing on the
entrepreneurial trajectory of Stavros Niarchos through the interaction of endogenous and
exogenous factors. Endogenous factors refer to the entrepreneur’s skills, strategic choices,
and personal characteristics, while exogenous factors relate to the international and national
economic as well as socio-political environment in which he operated. Despite the absence of
a family background in shipping, Niarchos succeeded in building one of the largest privately
owned fleets of the 20th century. The study explores his family's origins, his initial
involvement in shipping, and the establishment of the Niarchos Group in 1939, along with the
subsequent evolution of its fleet until 2003. Particular emphasis is placed on the strategies
adopted to ensure long-term survival and growth of the enterprise under conditions of intense
economic and political change. Furthermore, the thesis analyzes the group’s business
structure and the offshore corporate model it employed, while also presenting its investment
initiatives in Greece and their contribution to the development of Greek industry and the
national economy.
