Abstract
This thesis examines the concept of economic security within the European Union (EU), focusing on the medical technology sector and the integration of policies and strategies that enhance the Union’s resilience, innovation, and strategic autonomy. The central argument of the study is that the EU’s transformation is not driven by isolated actions but by a coordinated and complementary set of policies. Through an analysis of regulations, strategies, and instruments implemented by the Union, the research reveals a vision for a safer, more stable, autonomous, and resilient Europe, benefiting both citizens and investors.
The study explains the foundational concepts underpinning the tools, strategies, and policies designed to strengthen European identity and advance the Union as a strategic global actor. These initiatives aim to promote greater autonomy, modernization, protection, prevention, and smoother crisis management. A SWOT analysis of the medical technology sector highlights strengths, such as strong presence of enterprises and advanced technological innovation, alongside weaknesses, including regulatory complexity and associated costs. While, opportunities emerge for enhancing strategic autonomy and competitiveness, while threats include geopolitical tensions, rapid technological change, and pressures on small and medium-sized enterprises.
The thesis also identifies trade-offs arising from the EU’s new policies. Objectives related to security and innovation may financially burden businesses and delay the commercialization of innovations, potentially affecting the Union’s global competitiveness. Addressing these challenges effectively is essential to maintaining a balance between economic security, sustainable growth, and resilience against crises.
In conclusion, the study finds that the careful design and implementation of the EU’s tools and policies, with a balanced approach to security, innovation, and economic sustainability, can transform these challenges into growth drivers, making the European Union more resilient and globally influential.
