Recycling constitutes a fundamental pillar of sustainable development and the circular economy. Nevertheless, low levels of citizen participation are observed in recycling practices, despite the increased level of awareness regarding environmental issues faced by modern societies. This master’s thesis investigates the discrepancy between knowledge and actual individual behavior concerning recycling, with particular emphasis on the psychological and social factors that influence decision- making.
The study adopts a quantitative research approach through the use of questionnaire distributed to citizens with diverse demographic characteristics. The findings were analyzed using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis, aiming to examine the relationship between environmental awareness, social influence, and recycling behavior.
The results indicate that a high level of awareness and a positive attitude toward recycling do not necessarily lead to active participation or consistent recycling practices. Certain factors play a decisive role in shaping behavior, including social influence, the availability of appropriate infrastructure, and the perceived ease of the recycling process.
The thesis concludes that strengthening recycling behavior requires interventions that go beyond the mere provision of information and take into account the social and operational context in which citizens act. The design of effective and socially acceptable recycling policies can be achieved through the application of tools derived from Behavioral Economics.
