This master's thesis examines the factors that influence the mental health of
individuals aged 50 and over, using data from the European SHARE survey (Survey
of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe). The aim of the study is to investigate
the relationship between socioeconomic, demographic, and psychosocial variables
and the occurrence of depressive symptoms in this population, through a comparative
analysis
between
Greece
and
Italy,
before
and
after
Covid-19.
The analysis is based on data from eight waves of interviews conducted during the
period 2004–2020 and includes a substantial number of participants aged 50 and
above. Factors examined include economic status, household income, social support,
health conditions, as well as specific psychological variables captured through the
EURO-D scale, such as depression, pessimism, sleep disturbances, irritability, fatigue,
feelings of guilt, and suicidal thoughts.
Using descriptive statistical methods and econometric models, the study explores the
role of social and economic conditions in shaping mental health. The findings
highlight the importance of income, social support, health status, and demographic
characteristics as key factors associated with the presence of depression. At the same
time, the comparison between Greece and Italy allows for an understanding of the
differences arising from their distinct socioeconomic and institutional contexts.
The ultimate goal of the study is to contribute to the understanding of the mental
health of the selected population and to provide substantial findings. The ultimate
goal of the study is to contribute to the understanding of the mental health of the
