This thesis focuses on waste management within the framework of the circular economy and sustainable development, placing particular emphasis on the social, economic, and technological dimensions of the issue. Through an extensive literature review and empirical research, using a structured questionnaire, it explores the attitudes and perceptions of various citizens regarding waste management and recycling, as well as the factors that influence their participation in related practices. The study then analyzes the main methods and models of waste management, highlighting key issues such as waste categorization, the implementation of green technologies, and institutional developments at both European and national levels. Particular attention is given to the environmental impacts resulting from improper waste management, as well as the challenges Greece faces in its transition toward a more sustainable waste management model.
Based on the questionnaire results, the study concludes that environmental education, citizens’ social awareness, and the implementation of targeted policies can serve as significant incentives for individual participation. Consequently, the overall improvement in the performance of the waste management system will become increasingly attainable.
Finally, the thesis presents proposals aimed at strengthening existing practices and shaping new strategies, always guided by the principles of sustainability and the circular economy.
