This thesis examines the role of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in the formation of electricity prices in European electricity markets. The main objective is to investigate the relationship between the penetration of RES and retail electricity prices, taking into account the differences between household and non-household consumers. The empirical analysis is based on panel data for a sample of European countries over the period 2017–2023. A fixed effects econometric model is employed, allowing for the control of unobserved, time-invariant country-specific characteristics, as well as common time effects. The model includes variables capturing the energy mix, economic activity, and demographic characteristics of the countries, with particular emphasis on the share of RES in electricity generation. The results indicate that the impact of RES on electricity prices differs across consumer categories. For non-household consumers, an increase in RES penetration is associated with a reduction in electricity prices, consistent with the merit-order effect. In contrast, for household consumers, the effect of RES is not found to be statistically robust, suggesting that pricing mechanisms and regulatory frameworks limit the pass-through of wholesale market effects to final retail prices.
