This dissertation examines the evolution, categorisation, and contemporary challenges of women’s human rights, highlighting the persistent inequalities that shape women’s experiences across different social, cultural, and religious environments. Drawing on a multidisciplinary framework, the study analyses the conceptual foundations of human rights, the development of key international and European legal instruments, and the ways in which gender intersects with broader structures of power and discrimination. Particular emphasis is placed on the status of women in Western societies and within Islamic cultural and religious contexts, revealing both long-standing barriers and emerging dynamics of social change. The research further explores the European Union’s strategic agenda for gender equality, assessing the policies and institutional mechanisms designed to promote equal treatment and combat gender-based discrimination. Overall, the dissertation aims to contribute to the ongoing academic dialogue on gender and human rights by offering a comprehensive examination of the normative frameworks and socio-political conditions that shape the realisation of women’s rights in contemporary societies.
