The thesis explores the energy efficiency measures employed in ship operations within the
broader context of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decarbonization strategy.
The study aims to assess the level of awareness, implementation, and challenges related to
energy efficiency measures among shipping professionals. A structured questionnaire was
designed and distributed to shipping operators focusing on technical and operational measures
and regulatory drivers such as the EEDI, EEXI, and CII. The responses were analyzed with
both statistical results and interpretative commentary presented. Findings indicate that while
awareness of IMO requirements is generally high, practical implementation often encounters
barriers including financial constraints, technical limitations and operational challenges. The
respondents highlighted opportunities for improvement through enhanced training, data-driven
monitoring, and wider adoption of proven technical measures. The thesis concludes that energy
efficiency remains a crucial enabler of maritime decarbonization, supporting the industry’s
transition towards long-term sustainability.
