This thesis analyses the capacity of the port of Mykonos in light of increasing tourism development and intensifying pressures on the island's infrastructure related to the port, the environment, and society. Mykonos is one of the most important tourist destinations in Greece, with its port playing a key role in the accommodation of passengers, cruise ships, and recreational boats.
The study applies a qualitative method of assessing carrying capacity, based on a review of international literature, the positions of institutional stakeholders, and strategic studies, as well as an analysis of the port's operational characteristics. Due to the lack of universally accepted quantitative criteria for complex port systems, the study focuses on the combined assessment of parameters such as infrastructure capacity, seasonality, concentration of activities, and impacts on operations and the local community.
In addition, the institutional framework is analysed and management and policy strategies for the sustainable operation of the port are proposed. The analysis is reinforced with examples of international island destinations, such as Santorini, Ibiza, and Dubrovnik, which highlight the use of good practices in the management of overtourism. In conclusion, it is found that the port of Mykonos is operating almost at the limits of its carrying capacity, making it imperative to implement comprehensive and tailored sustainable management strategies.
