Abstract

The state has existed in the minds of many since time immemorial, to such an extent that many cannot imagine life without it, but is this really the case? In this thesis, we will examine the creation of the state, the reasons and purposes behind it, as well as its evolution over the centuries, to arrive at the contemporary phenomenon of privatization, which takes place within it. Our aim is, through a theoretical and historical review, to clarify the purpose of the modern state, whether it has remained unchanged over the years or whether it has changed or evolved, as well as to investigate whether today's privatizations can serve this purpose or not. For the purpose of our research and in order to answer this question, we will take a historical look back at the years that preceded our era and, once we have defined our research question, which is "whether privatization has succeeded in improving the social welfare of citizens," we will investigate it, based on the experience of Greek citizens. Throughout our project, we will explain our reasoning in detail, analyze the term privatization and its correlation with the term welfare, we will look at case studies from the Greek reality and we will present our research, which we will explain, so that we can conclude whether privatizations serve their purpose.
