This thesis conducts a comparative analysis of public deficit trends in Greece, the
Netherlands, Italy, and Portugal over the period 2000–2024. It explores the impact of major
economic crises, fiscal management strategies, and institutional interventions implemented
by each country, with particular emphasis on the repercussions of the global financial crisis
and the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on statistical data and policy analysis, the study
highlights key differences in fiscal performance and the sustainability of public debt.
Furthermore, it assesses the role of European support mechanisms and evaluates future
prospects for effective fiscal governance within the examined countries.
