| dc.description.abstractEN | The sweeping urbanization and industrialization trends witnessed over the past century have amplified a phenomenon characterized by elevated temperatures in urban regions compared to rural surroundings, described as Urban Heat Islands (UHIs). Currently, in Europe, with more than seventy percent of the European population living in cities, UHIs implications have grown increasingly profound, affecting urban systems, ecosystems, human health, energy use, and the broad city sustainability. Setting out for a comprehensive examination of the UHI within the European context, this study reflects on its historical evolution, implications on health and environment as well as the European governance mechanisms addressing it. It traces the institutional framework's roots with the European legislation and policies most specifically the European Green Deal and Urban Agenda for the EU. By way of providing an integrative narrative on how Europe has fared against UHIs, this thesis maps not only the present position of the region but can be used to guide the urbanizing areas globally that are facing those same challenges. Finally, the research highlights that the holistic understanding of UHIs across Europe stresses the necessity of addressing this critical urban scenario in an effort to pursue the goal of a sustainable urban future. | el |
