The thesis examines the current state of and developments in Africa's electricity market, drawing comparisons with the institutional and operational model of the European Union (EU). The main objective is to analyse the extent to which African countries could implement reforms similar to those introduced in the EU's Third Energy Package in 2009, with the aim of creating a competitive, integrated and sustainable electricity market. This comparative approach considers the unique challenges and opportunities in Africa, taking into account its socioeconomic diversity, disparities in energy access and limitations in infrastructure. The methodology combines macroeconomic analysis with an in-depth study of energy markets, focusing on general economic indicators and specific sector-specific features. The thesis includes detailed case studies of three African countries — South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia — showcasing different stages of energy market development and reforms. Through an extensive review of the literature and analysis of official sources, the thesis evaluates whether the European model could be a valuable guide for Africa's energy transition, while taking into account local contexts and realities.
