This paper examines the role and importance of Port Community Systems (PCS) in the context of the digitization of port infrastructure, with particular emphasis on the case of Greece. PCS are digital platforms that facilitate the exchange of data between all stakeholders in a port, contributing to the optimization of the supply chain, reducing bureaucracy, and enhancing transparency and security.
The paper analyzes the historical development of PCS, their structure and functionality, as well as the multiple benefits of their implementation in ports, such as reduced processing time, improved environmental performance, and increased competitiveness. Particular reference is made to the current situation in Greek ports, where digitization remains at an early stage, with fragmented initiatives and no unified national strategy.
A comparative analysis with foreign ports, such as Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Singapore, highlights the need for the immediate adoption of PCS in Greece. Specific actions are proposed, such as the creation of a unified digital architecture, the enhancement of interoperability, staff training, and the utilization of financial tools.
In conclusion, the paper emphasizes that PCS is a critical factor for the technological and operational modernization of Greek ports, strengthening the country's position in the international transport and logistics network.
