The shipping industry is a cornerstone of global trade, providing essential support for international commerce and logistics. Today, it operates in an era of rapid technological advancements, often referred to as the “digital revolution” or “Industry 4.0,” which reshapes operational landscapes. The integration of digital technologies in navigation, cargo and supply chain management, and customer service offers opportunities for increased efficiency, safety, and competitiveness. However, implementing these technologies presents significant challenges. Shipping companies must make complex decisions regarding investments, technology selection, and organizational adaptation, while also navigating technological, organizational, and regulatory barriers. This thesis examines the strategic implications of digitalization in shipping by exploring its key drivers, applications, and challenges. Through a review of academic literature, it identifies cost efficiency and customer satisfaction as primary drivers, highlights how digital technologies are applied across shipping activities, and discusses the obstacles to successful implementation. The findings suggest that effective digitalization requires aligning technologies with business objectives and fostering a culture of innovation to overcome barriers. This research provides insights into how shipping companies can strategically leverage digitalization to enhance operational performance and sustain competitive advantage in a rapidly evolving industry.
