Abstract
Introduction: The provision of primary dental care services is important for the prevention of oral diseases and for the promotion of oral health in the population of all ages.
Aim: To assess the level of oral health of primary school children living on the island of Amorgos. To investigate the determinants of compliance to oral health related habits.
Material and method: The study design included the completion of questionnaires by the children's parents and completion of a form related to children's oral health based on the students' clinical examination. A questionnaire with information regarding demographic characteristics and characteristics related to oral health-related habits and a child oral health status form were used.
Results: 94% of the children had strong teeth, 26.2% had at least one decayed tooth, 6% had at least one sealed tooth, 3.6% were found to have blocked holes and fissures, 1.2% had a crown, 88.6% adhered to oral hygiene measures, and 69% had fluoridation. The increase in weight and height were associated with an increase in the frequency of visits to the dentist in the last year (p=0.045 and p=0.004 respectively). Children in the younger class adhered to oral hygiene measures to a greater extent than children in the older class (p=0.032). Children who adhered to oral hygiene measures visited the dentist less frequently in the past year than children who did not adhere to oral hygiene measures (p=0.049).
Conclusions: The oral health of primary school children residing on the island of Amorgos was at a good level. Therefore, the primary dental care services provided are effective, despite the fact that the island of Amorgos is considered a barren area and therefore, the provision of dental care services is limited.
