The maritime industry is one of the most globalized sectors, with ships sailing in international waters and crews originating from various parts of the world. Multiculturalism in ship crews is a frequent phenomenon, as individuals from different cultural backgrounds collaborate daily to ensure the safe and efficient operation of vessels. This multiculturalism can offer significant benefits, such as the promotion of new ideas, enhanced creativity, and increased adaptability to different environments. However, it also presents challenges, such as communication difficulties, cultural misunderstandings, and complications in the decision-making process within the team.
This undergraduate thesis aims to examine how multiculturalism affects crew performance in modern shipping. Special emphasis will be placed on strategies that can be implemented to enhance intercultural communication and develop cultural competence. The study will explore ways in which the ship’s crew can improve teamwork, problem-solving, and decision-making, while ensuring high standards of safety and operational efficiency. Through case study analysis and research, this study aims to propose best practices for managing multicultural crews.
