This thesis examines the potential impact of the UN Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) agreement, also known as High Seas Treaty, on global marine biodiversity. It starts by examining the importance of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction
(ABNJ) and the shortcomings of existing ocean governance frameworks, focusing on the lack of comprehensive legal structures for ABNJ. A detailed examination of the treaty's progression is provided, emphasizing its main principles and goals, such as area-based management and environmental impact assessments. The thesis assesses next how the treaty could improve the protection of marine biodiversity by examining studies on Marine Protected Areas and sustainable-use practices. The conclusion evaluates the benefits and limitations of the treaty, emphasizing that its success will rely on global collaboration and enforcement.
