In the present paper, a summarized presentation of the clothing industry, including the textile and ready-to-wear sectors, is attempted through revisiting past modes of operation, the data currently at hand and the future goals set for transforming the industry sustainably.
Clothing is a multidimensional, psychological and social invention directly linked to human presence since the beginning of humanity. Originally a necessary means of survival, it ended up being a product of the consumerism frenzy. From craft products to a whole industrial sector that employs hundreds of millions of workers and from being a non-traceable material, transformed to being a non-degradable one making the clothing one of the most polluting sectors for the environment and for society as a whole. In an industry with such rapid growth, the current operational practices are unable to reduce the negative consequences being caused. This would require structural changes at the level of materials, methods, technologies, operating model, mentality and consumer habits. The purpose of this paper is to create a brief report of the practices necessary for the sector to merge with the wider framework of conditions formed at a global level and to aim at the protection of the environment, economic stability and the provision of needed services to society.
