Long-term health care and chronic diseases have always occupied an extremely important interest within health systems. In recent years, however, there has been an ever-increasing attention given the fact that the increase of life expectancy and the aging of the population increase the demand for such services. The current study focuses on long-term health care and its relationship with private insurance, attempting a comprehensive approach to an issue that is extremely vulnerable to social, economic, political and technological changes. Both the relevant literature on this theme and the international practice agree that despite the multiple benefits it can provide, private long-term health care insurance still remains at low levels, not only as a result of high insurance premiums and the phenomenon of adverse selection, but also due to the low degree of readiness of the citizens to perceive this perspective. In any case, there is a significant margin for growth. However, it should be highlighted that private insurance does not seek to replace the social benefits, but, on the contrary, plays an eminently complementary role.
