This essay negotiates, initially, basic information for understanding the operations of shipping companies, the strategies they follow and their inner workings. Specifically, the internal environment of shipping companies that manage a diversified fleet is examined and compared with that of shipping companies that manage one type of ship, through two examples of shipping companies, one for each case. Observations are made and similarities and differences are highlighted to better understand the operation of shipping companies with a diversified fleet.
Indicatively, chapter 1 describes basic concepts such as shipping, company status, and the diversified fleet while chapter 2 studies their goals and strategies and the environments that affect a shipping company. In chapter 3 the concept of organizational structure is introduced, the factors that influence it but also the concept of complexity and the types of differentiation that one can encounter in the departments of a shipping company which are analyzed in chapter 4. In chapter 5, the organization of two shipping companies is analyzed, one of which manages one type of ship and the other diversified fleet and, finally, chapter 6 compares them.
