The Dissertation aims to investigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Greek economy by focusing on the results of the hotel and catering sectors in relation to the 2008 crisis. Industries that survived the 2008 crisis, such as tourism, transport, and hotels, suffered significantly during the COVID-19 health crisis.
After analyzing the data collected from reliable databases such as the World Bank, the OECD, Eurostat, and others, it became clear that the coronavirus pandemic has caused significant changes in business models and the way employees work (telework, part-time, etc.).
Given the transmission of coronavirus from person to person, tourism and catering are the two sectors most affected as the fear of contamination is much stronger than the fear of financial failure that prevailed in the 2008 crisis.
The findings of the comparative analysis show that the hotel industry showed resilience during both the 2008 crisis and the current pandemic. On the contrary, the catering industry (taverns, restaurants, cafes) was much more affected by the pandemic as it suffered the biggest lockdown in duration.
