Europe's prosperity seems to have been on the rise during the last decades, but inequalities in income, wealth, education, health, nutrition, living conditions, occupations, social identity and social participation are constantly growing between and within countries. These inequalities not only affect negatively individuals and communities, but also limit overall economic development, undermining social justice and thus harming the functioning of society as a whole.
The European Union consistently states that health is one of the most important issues for all its citizens. However, in recent decades the health sector, like many others, has been affected by the growing inequality.
Poor growth performance over the past three decades in the European Union has allayed concerns about rising wage disparities, income inequality and social exclusion. Indeed, using different indexes, there are clear indications that income inequality has increased significantly since the mid-1980s. In the aftermath of the financial and economic crisis of the late 21st century, its issue has once again become a national political debate in many countries.
The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to define and study economic inequality in the countries of the European Union, as well as to examine whether there is indeed convergence in income inequality between certain countries.
This thesis consists of three main parts. First, we present a historical overview of how the European Union was created with the goals and values that were established and how they evolved. Next, we study the concept of inequality from both a theoretical and a mathematical point of view, presenting some key indicators for measuring it, with more emphasis on how the health sector is affected by it. Finally, we intend to present a quantitative analysis in order to draw some useful conclusions regarding some key indicators related to health and how they are affected by various other factors.
