Port activities involve a series of important environmental aftereffects. The constantly rising number of ports, merchant vessels and commodities transported by them, creates fundamental problems for the local communities and for the environment in general. Atmospheric and water pollution, litter production and management and noise pollution are only some of the existent problems.
In the context of a more environmentally friendly approach and embracing the idea of sustainability, ports are now taking measures to mitigate the pollution caused by them, protecting the environment and its local community, in which they depend for their regular operation.
To help them achieve this goal, multiple anti-pollution technologies and standards for environmental management (EcoPorts, Green Marine, ISO 14001, EMAS) have been developed, aiming at reducing and preventing environmental pollution and at optimizing the management of the environmental issues.
Many ports, regardless of size or activities, have adopted these standards and are moving dynamically, embracing technologies and other solutions to better their sustainability levels.
