Obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century. The
consequences of childhood obesity can profoundly affect children's physical health,
but also their social and emotional well-being and self-esteem. The aim of the thesis
is to explore the economic and social implications of obese and overweighted
children, stressing the importance of prevention and referring to the weaknesses that
characterise the management of this issue in our country.
The socio-economic level is considered to be a determining factor in the onset of
central obesity in childhood, with this relationship being complex and significantly
influenced by demographic factors. Early prevention is considered a primary measure
to tackle childhood obesity. The evidence highlights the importance of nutrition,
eating behaviours, physical activity and treatment in the context of psychological
support, especially through cognitive behavioural therapy programs. The holistic
approach to intervention of childhood obesity is essential for Greece, which is among
leaders in childhood obesity globally and has significant obstacles in the management
of this issue.
