Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the human resource development policies and programmes through education and training in the tourism sector in Greece. This literature study reports the contribution of the tourism sector to employment, the tourism education and training in Greece at all levels and the “Partnership Agreement for the Development Framework 2014-2020” operational programmes in tourism education. The importance of education and training in human resource development is also studied. This is achieved by identifying and selecting relevant studies, research, and statistical data.
The contribution of tourism is important in shaping GDP and employment by creating jobs that are either directly or indirectly linked. Despite education and training being linked to human resources development, it was found that tourism education and training in Greece suffers from multi-supervision and fragmentation. Even though many curricula linked to tourism professions are available, tourism education faces weaknesses and disorders. Taking into consideration the fact that tourism is an important production sector for the country, many projects have been implemented in the framework of “PADF 2014-2020” which had the development of tourism and human resources declared as a goal. Finally, due to the needs of the Ionian Islands Region, actions to develop human resources have been implemented under the relevant “Regional Operational Programme”.
