The phenomenon of terrorism has been a concern for the international community for centuries. From the 9/11 attacks, when the issue of terrorism came to the fore, and even to the terrorist attacks that are taking place nowadays, this phenomenon seems to be the most serious threat to international peace and security. On the one hand, the disregard for the right to life and the use of violence by the terrorists, and on the other hand, the need to impose measures against terrorists in order to safeguard security, violate human rights. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the relationship between security preservation and human rights protection in the EU, mainly after the increase in the Union's repressive and preventive measures, which has disrupted the desired balance of security and rights. The result of this imbalance is the violation of human rights, infringements of Europeans' personal data and the triggering of a climate of Islamophobia, far-right populism and anti-terrorist hysteria. This thesis investigates also the education’s contribution to the mitigation of terrorism and the ways it can be possible. Furthermore, emphasis is given to EU’s educational actions of preventing radicalization.
