N | This paper studies operational interaction of international naval forces and shipping community in the Strait of Hormuz under two assumptions: (i) naval forces operate in full compliance with the international law and (ii) naval forces’ operational capabilities are suitable to contribute to efforts for the protection of transiting oil tankers. The international community through the IMO has issued the ISPS Code detailing the minimal security arrangements for states and shipping companies. However, maritime threats in the Strait of Hormuz against tankers present distinctive features that do not fall into ISPS Code provisions. This dissertation will attempt to examine which operational configuration of naval forces would be able to help the reduction of vulnerability for transiting merchant vessels and especially oil-tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. | el |
