This thesis explores the marginal propensity to consume in eight developed countries of Europe. The aim of the study is to examine the behavior of the consumption when the discretionary income changes at the period of 1999 to 2018 with a division of time periods in pre crisis period and post crisis period. This research is accomplished by using econometric techniques and theories from excel. The empirical part of this work uses annual observations of the Gross Domestic Product and consumption for the countries: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal. The time span of the research covers a period from 1999 to 2018 and the data were collected from the database World Development Indicators (WDI), of World Data Bank.
Τhe empirical results of the study, for all the countries examined, indicate that there is a different behavior of the marginal propensity to consume in the four central countries of Europe in comparison with the other regional countries. The first four countries, specifically Austria, Belgium, France and Germany behave similarly before and after the crisis. That is to say, for each additional unit of income, the average amount of person consumes are about 0.66. While for the rest of the post-crisis countries there is a fall in marginal propensity to consume with the exception of Greece, before the crisis their average stands at 0.84. Marginal propensity to consume measures the sensitivity of Variable Consumption when disposable income changes.
