Abstract

This work is an attempt to analyze and approach the Organ Donation System and Transplantation in Greece, compared to other EU countries. It analyzes the diachronic issue of organ donation and its dimensions. The research begins with the historical retrospective and the process of donating and transplanting organs to enter to the case of Greece, its legal framework and within the framework of the European Union. In addition, the moral and ethical issues of organ donation are analyzed, as the discussion on the subject is not the same for everyone. The purpose of the survey is to clarify both the issue of donating organs to patients and to ascertain whether this procedure presents differences between Greece and the other countries of the European Union. The research includes a bibliographic reference to the concept of Organ Donation and Transplantation, and identifies the obstacles and shortcomings that occur in this field. Finally, measures and procedures are proposed in order to help in the operation of the Organ Donation System and in the increase of transplants in Greece. This work will be useful to those who are actively involved in the process of Organ Donation, Health Professionals, and also the rest of the world, who knows neither the procedures nor the institutional framework of transplants in our country. The aim of this study is to motivate initially health professionals who are actively involved in the Organ Donation System, as well as ordinary citizens to be informed so that they can actively participate in this life-important system. From this study, there are some weaknesses in the overall context of the transplantation process, as well as the general organization and staffing of the particular system. In view of these shortcomings and the obstacles presented, some changes are proposed, with the help of other systems implemented in the EU, aimed at improving and increasing transplants in Greece.
