Through this thesis, with subject “Developments on human workforce of Greek Merchant Shipping from 2004-2014”, we will study the developments in respect of the human workforce of the Greek Merchant Shipping and specifically during the period 2004-2014. There are various factors that have affected the role of human element in modern merchant shipping. Since 2004, coupled with the financial crisis of 2008, we have observed changes in the economic figures of shipping with regards to its labor force, mainly through the substitution of Greeks with foreign seafarers. In addition, we have noticed changes caused by the phenomenon of globalization and the evolution of technology that have affected the role of human factor in modern shipping both at global and national level. Some other modern issues are the level and form of marine education, the lack of proper information for newcomers in the industry, the current opportunities and threats as they have been shaped in the maritime profession, and how a typical modern maritime unit (shore offices) operates in recent years. In conclusion, reference is made to the main changes that have been made by the Labor Conventions that have been in place since 2004 on the labor force and how these have been implemented in Greek shipping.
