The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how effective the Hellenic Competition Commission is compared to six other European Union countries. It will be based on examining the intensity of competition in Greece and the factors that affect it. Further more, through this empirical analysis, conclusions will be drawn regarding the effectiveness of the Hellenic Competition Commission.
The first part of this paper describes the function, the role, the legal framework and the responsibilities of the Hellenic Competition Commission. Subsequently, we see examples of its intervention as well as some of its most important actions.
In the second part, we describe the legal framework, the role and function of the other competition committees in the study countries, which are alphabetically Austria, Belgium, Hungary, Portugal, Sweden and the Czech Republic, selected because of the population census with Greece. Committees' statistics for 2015 and 2016 are analyzed, as well as the ranking of these countries in the World Economic Forum's Competitiveness Report for 2017.
