Abstract

It is clear that shipping is one of the most dynamic and continually evolving markets, in which constant updates, alertness and speed towards decision making are fundamental characteristics. Starting from the sailing boats with the rows during the previous centuries we now have electric ships and natural gas and starting from the traditional maps we have ended up to GPS and AIS systems. Additionally, special attention is being drawn, nowadays, to the psychological aspect of the seafarers particularly, apart from the decent working and living conditions; it is important to bear in mind that maritime employment is undoubtedly very tough and demanding, with a lot of dangers and often under unfavorable circumstances. As a result, shipping inevitably the latest years takes into account on a daily basis various and different issues and is obliged to follow and comply with concrete international and national agreements and regulations. This industry does this in such a way that we can inspect and certify the meaning of safety, quality, protection of the environment and welfare of those who work for shipping both on board and ashore. The present essay aims to highlight in a simple and understandable way, briefly, theoretically and also with some practical observations the main guidelines of the institutional framework in which shipping is based, the primary actors and of course the audits-inspections taking place to guarantee the reliability and the seaworthiness and the correction of the negative aspects of this sector.
